The ancient kingdom of Kourion is one of the most splendid archaeological sites on the island. The impressive Graeco-Roman Theatre, that overlooks the blue Mediterranean Sea was built in the 2nd century BC and enlarged in the 2nd century AD. Nowadays is fully restored and it is used for musical and theatrical performances. The House of Eustolios features many rooms with extraordinary 5th century AD mosaic floors and a complex of baths. The Early Christian basilica, dated to the 5th century, is thought to have been the Cathedral of Kourion, also to be seen is the Roman era stadium dated to the 2nd century AD.
Amathus is one of the biggest ancient kingdoms on the island. Legend has it that Ariadne, the gorgeous daughter of Minos, King of Crete, left Crete with Thiseas and went to Amathus. Thiseas abandoned her there, while she was with child, to fight the Minotaur back to Crete. There is historical evidence here from at least 3000 years ago. A very significant find of excavating was a temple set high on the cliff, where they worshiped Aphrodite, the Goddess of Beauty and Love. That beautiful place is built on the coastal cliffs with a breathtaking view of the sea and visitors get to discover the area and see the all archaeological treasures.
The Castle of Kolossi was originally built in 1210 and rebuilt in its present form in the middle of the 15th century. The castle initially belonged to King Hugh I who gave it to the Knights of St. John for them to support him in his fight against the Muslims. Kolossi then became one of the Knights' most important overseas assets as they upgraded the villages doing all sorts of improvements. They produced the famous Commandaria wine, which was wanted after all over Europe and brought the knights fame and fortune. According to the legend, the Kolossi Castle is where Richard the Lion-heart and Queen Berengaria spent their honeymoon.
Limassol Port is the main port of Cyprus, serving most of the island's seaborne cargo and passenger traffic.
